Project Description

This project details the design and construction of a Flag and Certificate Display Case.  I made a display case for my father-in-law that holds an American flag and certificate. The flag and certificate were presented to him by an active Navy Seal serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The certificate shows the date the flag was flown over Camp Patton in Fallujah. This was quite an honor for my father-in-law, and the flag and certificate deserved a special case to preserve and protect them.

The display case is constructed from red oak. The corners of the case feature a contrasting dovetail shaped inlay of walnut.

This video covers:

  • Mitering basics
  • Biscuit Joinery
  • Dovetail shaped inlay
  • Installing glass
  • Matte cutting

What size flag does the case hold?  3x5 or 5x8?

Hi D...

Hello John and Deborah

One thing about the US American Flag display?
When presenting one or displaying one in a nice beautiful showcase, you need to have only three(3) stars showing. I was in the USMC for quite awhile, knowing how to fold one is very necessary to achieve this display.

Also, was wondering on your jig for the triangle corners. How you did the dovetail on the other angles other than45 degrees, or maybe I just missed something.

thx love your work

Steve

Hi Deborah, my case was for 3 x5 flag.  Here's some info that may help you scale the dimensions for another size:

As far as I know, there are three basic flag sizes (in feet):
1.) 3 x 5 (standard size). This is what I had.
2.) 4 x 6 (not as common, but used when something larger than 3 x 5 is desired.
3.) 5 x 9.5 (burial or casket size)

I only have dimensions for #1 and #3, so you may to calculate something in between for the 4x6.  I got this information from:
http://www.classicalhardwood.com

Some variance can occur in folding, but here is the general size (inside dimensions) for a case for folded flags 1 and 3.

#1 - 13 3/8 base, 6 3/4 high, 9 1/2 along the side.

#3 - 22 base, 11 high, 15 5/8 along the side.

Hi Herb,

I'm glad you like the flag and certificate case, and I'm sure your second compartment for medal would look great.  A simple base might be a good addition to this type of case.  A flat board with a routed edge, with two dowels sticking out of it, and the case sits vertically on it and is held in place on the dowels.  Using the dowels to make a removable base allows you to hang it on the wall in the future.  Good luck with your case, please let me know how it comes out.  John

I was looking for a display case and saw your video! Instantly I said I can do this and it will look beautiful! Love the corner dovetail inlays. It is exactly what I wanted. May even add a small display frame at the bottom for the few medals I was awarded when I served in the military a LONG time ago!

Thanks. Have now bookmarked our site.

I love your display case. Sad to say I do not have your skills.  I received a flag and certificate for Christmas from my daughter's fiance which flew over his base in Iraq on The Marine Corp's Birthday 2008. Do you possible sell these. If so I would like to purchase one.

God Bless
Linda

Hi Robert,

The mitering jig used in the video is a design from WOOD magazine called the Universal Tablesaw jig.

You can find information on the jig here:
www.eaglelakewoodworking.com/.../...lesaw-Jig.aspx

and

Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi John, beautiful display case.  I am a den leader for my son's cub scout troop and we received a flag that was flown over a base in Iraq when another of our leaders was serving over there.  I am just a beginner at woodworking and was wandering if there were plans available for this project?  I looked at the projects file on this and only saw the angles of the cuts, no other plans.  Thanks for any help you can give.
